David Feng was on social media, of sorts, as early as the start of the new millennium. From a site on Friendster, to tweeting as of late 2007, social media is not alien to him at all. With the increasing prominence of the technology, he enrolled in his media studies PhD course in 2009 with a particular focus on social media.

Viewing the appropriate use of social media as a manifestation of the will of users — a bit like a “Web demo” — he argued that social media was a powerful tool, but social media literacy was also of the essence.
David views the proper use of social media as an empowered expression of sentiment by the population, whilst always being aware to misuse thereof — in the form of manufactured consent, bots, interference by Big Government/Big Money, and, increasingly, algorithms and AI if unregulated.

He has since evolved on the model of the “Web demo” which he presented as part of his media studies, emphasising far more on the importance of social media literacy rather than exclusively on the results of communicated content over a wider range.
Social media is an important part of our communications world today. David advocates responsibility and accountability on both sides of the line — by the participant, and by stakeholders — by citizens, and by the authorities. Constructive, inquisitive dialogue, not absent of sharp comments on matters of concern, and a listening attitude and a willingness to take cognisance, are crucial to moving the conversation forward and to initiating change.
馮琰認為，基於他在傳播學課程提及之「線上呼聲展示」(Web demo)，應更加重視社交媒體素養，而不進社交媒體之傳播擴大效應。
社交媒體乃屬當前社會重要溝通渠道之一。馮琰主張，雙方應秉承負責任態度，無論是使用者或當權者。具有建設性、探索性的對話，包括對關鍵問題提出尖銳批評，在由民眾提出，當權者仔細聆聽並決定予以承認時，將會對促進良性改善具有建設性。
